Mac Versus Windows 7?

Which is better when considering price, performance, graphics card, user interface, support, hardware compatibility, looks, work capability, hard drive space, program support, and durability?

(Note: For each, take into the price of a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Also take into consideration about how a Mac can run Windows, but not the other way around.)

If you don’t mind, please rate out of 10….
- Performance (Speed, Crashes?)
- Support
- Hardware Compatibility
- User interface (Ease of access)
- Graphics – (Graphics Card)
- Durability – (How long until it needs to be replaced?)
- Cost – (Please don’t be ridiculous!)

Anyone who answers well will receive 10 points!

(Also, links to the model would be good, and the price for each.)
Yes, I plan to use commercial software (for example, Photoshop, Finale 2009, and Pinnacle Studio (unnecessary on a Mac, which comes with iMovie.))

My background was as a network manager. Prior to that I had 15 years experience with networking systems (mainframes and mini’s mainly). In one of my last positions our network had a mixture of PC’s and Macs.

Now, you tended to find that Mac users were fairly rabid and unreasonably critical of PC’s so you want to filter that out. However, after using both, and being a PC user, I certainly know why people like Macs so much.

What we found was:
- Macs had superior resistance to viral infections. I do not think this is disputed by too many people.
- Mac hardware and software was limited by comparison to material for PC’s (fair enough, with a population being 10 PCs to one Mac)
- Due to the above, Mac hardware was slightly dearer.
- Ditto on software.
- The Macs reputation for graphics handling (cards, monitors and software) is overstated. It was probably once true, but not so now.
- If you aply for a job with either Mac or PC expertise ONLY, the PC knowledge will be more valued (generally)
- Macs are not as “easy” or “intuitive” as so many people say. This is partly because of Microsofts move towards GUIs in 1995. Prior to this, that comment was true.
- If I had a fixed price budget and wanted biggest bang for my buck, the Mac would almost certainly win. This will be a contentious answer but I believe it to be true – in a business environment at least.

There are all sorts of comments people throw up (for and against) about Macs. Much of it is rooted in the 80′s or 90′s and simply irrelevant today.

While still a PC user, my next computer will be the best value-for-money box I can afford. A PC is likely to win (I build my own so it isn’t a true comparison). However if a Mac was on the market which equalled or bettered the PC I would not hesitate to buy it.

Remember, you will have Mac or PC software you have already bought so replacing it may be a factor in your decision. Also, remember that generally Macs are dearer than PCs to repair. At a personal level, I really hate the way Apple tries to discourage people from fixing their own hardware by putting onerous conditions on their warrenties. I also dislike some of their trade practices, though having said that, Microsoft won’t win many awards either.

With operating systems, many people are migrating towards some flavour of Unix (Linux etc). I think having a dual boot PC would be an excellent idea. You can familiarise yourself with all the Linux offerings out there (many are free – for high quality software). However by having a Windows partition, you will be able to do things that cannot happen under Linux/etc. Such examples would include games, specialist PC applications for busines, etc

To address your specific questions:
- Performance will probably be greatest under a PC (using an AMD chipset). However, the Macs performance is nothing to sniff at. I personally believe that neither should crash if installed correctly, so are equal. I think with a standard Intel chipset and a standard Mac, running a complex Excel macro, the Mac would win – just. This is an area I have done actual benchmarking in, though it was a while ago – and not using multi-core processors, so it might have changed. Remember, this is related to how much money you are prepared to spend.

- Support will probably be similar. There are many companies doing both, and on a forum like this you will get help from both user types. Spare parts for Mac are dearer.

- Graphics can cost you as much as the rest of the computer. The cards and screens can easily reach $A800. They are the high end, super-performing ones. I think more are made for PCs. However I have seen some stunning and fast Mac graphics so would say both are about the same, though Mac users say their high end graphics are still superior. This may be true, it is an area I am unsure of. Also, I used to love Macs due to their multimonitor support. I always provided my users with dual screens because of the productivity they claimed. This was borne out in reality. However PCs have done this for years too, and quite well. Consider this for business applications.

- PCs have long been marketed as upgradable by just changing a chipset or motherboard etc. This simply never happens to my knowledge. This is because when the chipset ages, so does everything else, meaning it is cheaper to buy new than to recycle. The durability race is probably won by Macs. When administering a mixed network, although 10% of the machines were Macs, I spent far far less than 10% of my time or budget fixing them. Mac wins this undoubtably IMHO. Re: access, this depends on the case it is built in. Some are wonderful and some are mongrels. Consider them to be the same.

- I think the costs of a Mac are slightly higher than a PC, partly because there are simply so many PCs. Also, Apples attitude towards raping its users push software and parts pricing artificialy high. If it was not for this, I think they would be the same. Also, whether I am right or wrong, I PERCEIVE Mac componentry to be a higher quality than much PC add-ons (from Mbd upwards).

My conclusion would be that I would happily buy a Mac if I could acquire one for the same price as building a PC (or, actually just a little more). I perceive Macs to be higher quality, engineered well, and supporting some excellent software. I am personally reluctant because I have several PC-type-peripherals used in my work (eg laser scanner, mag card readers, etc), and custom PC software. The Mac memory addressing is far superior, and I simply cannot think of a viable reason to knock them. However, in your decision, remember to consider a dual boot machine, allowing you to run Windows/Unix.

To give you costs and estimates is difficult because it depends on how you want to configure them. Rather, I have outlined the merits as I see them, leaving it to you to reach a standard. I’d be interested to know what you end up buying, and why – just out of curiosity.

What is the User Interface Toolkit?

<!– @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

The User Interface Toolkit was developed by Sun Microsystems employees as a C++ language on top of the XView graphical toolkit. The UIT boasts asset of design calls for client-server structural design. It consists of an API (Application Programming Interface which resides on the central server that has the ability of interacting with variety of clients. It was developed to provide freedom to custom web development experts who can make some innovative discoveries and focus on computational experiments.

UIT was an internal tools project developed by Mark Soloway and Joe Warcheza in 1990. Mark Soloway continued the project and created another version of UIT called UITV2 in 1992. The User Interface Toolkit brought a whole new level to the HPC (High Performance Computing) experience to website development services . Web developers are free to get the work accomplished as it allows user-friendly clients to get rid of time wasting barriers.

The User Interface Toolkit ensures easy access of all computing resources within the HPCMP (High Performance Computing and Modernization Program). Since UIT had a flexible design it aimed to have ease in websites development. It allowed developers to easily build one-size-fits-all interfaces. It also encouraged the creation of highly customized tools for in the web development and web page development field.

The User Interface Toolkit gave considerable importance to the security to users and developers. It used the Kerberos authentication tools. Web development services could easily access API through the Kerberos cards. The rich toolset also allowed custom web development experts create custom applications to handle file transfers, authentication and job submissions. Developers can download the complete source code for free. The source code is still available.

The main objective of User Interface Toolkit was to make life easier for developers. There were few interface ideas before the launch of UIT. It offered tools to develop next generation interfaces to High Performance Computing Systems. It provided a space for great ideas to evolve, take shape and mature.

Will Windows Vista force a migration to alternatives?

Windows Vista is a rumored to be a resource hog and will be loaded with the maxium amount of DRM known to mankind that will require obtaining a certificate and license for virtually every activity.
And although Microsoft Corp. has yet to finalize the minimum requirements for a PC to run Vista, it is unlikely to run the Aero Glass Graphics on anything with intergrated video.
Personally I don’t care because I don’t use Windows for anything except Tax Software and for that I still have a box that runs Windows 2000.
I much prefer Linux and FreeBSD but I am thinking about moving to MAC for convenience.
But, since most gaming has now moved to consoles and no one really cares very much about a fancy user interface, ( I am more interested in getting things done ) do you think that Windows Vista will force a migration to alternative operating systems?
Or do you think that most companies and home users will stay with 2K or XP until Microsoft stops supporting them and shuts them down?

There is a lot of hype about Vista but this all media generated and clever strategy. Seriously, whose going to care enough to invest in these new things/resources when you have a perfectly fine os like win xp?? Vista is only strong security wise and will be hard to pirate… but otherwise its not got much in it.
